These are our pasture-raised turkeys, and honestly, turkeys are some of the gentlest animals we have on the farm.

When you first walk up to them, they can be a little shy — they’re not quite sure what to make of you. But once they get to know you, they become incredibly gentle. Some will even let you pet them.

Like most of our animals, our turkeys are raised behind electric fencing and moved onto fresh pasture.

Turkeys are actually pretty simple. They need fresh pasture, room to roam, and a safe place to roost.

This is what we call our ‘Gobbly Goo’ — our mobile turkey shelter, inspired by Joel Salatin’s model. It gives the birds shade from the hot sun, protection from the rain, and at night, they all head up onto the roosts to get off the ground and stay safer from predators.

We raise both white and black, or heritage-style, turkeys. Our black turkeys tend to have a richer, darker meat, and they spend a lot of time foraging and making use of what’s growing around them.

We raise about 100 turkeys each year, and we sell out every year — so if you’re interested in one for Thanksgiving or Christmas, it’s a good idea to reserve one early.

And one thing that’s really important to us: our turkeys are processed right here on the farm by Rob and me.
